French authorities to begin intercepting small boats in Channel after British demands
France has agreed to begin intercepting small boats in the English Channel, after months of insistence from the UK.
This policy shift follows the British leader wrote to the French leader asking him to support the plan and stating there currently "have no effective preventive measure" in the Channel.
French maritime police have been authorized to intercept the small boats at sea, but exclusively prior to they've picked up their migrants, according to authoritative statements.
French authorities have rarely acted to prevent the heavily loaded boats departing from the shoreline because it is considered too great a danger to both personnel and individuals.
"It is crucial that we deploy these methods this period... We have zero effective prevention in the Channel waters."
Currently, a French maritime police representative states officers will start intervening at sea, with the objective of protecting lives.
Notably, the official excluded the use of entanglement devices to stop boats, which had earlier been reported as a potential technique to snarl the engines of the vessels.
This determination to take action at all is a major advancement, coming after a short-lived change towards a more aggressive approach this warmer season, which dropped off when the previous government official left office.
That was highlighted in the summer month, in the run-up to a summit between the UK leader and President, when authorities were observed wading into the sea to slash the hulls of a boat.
Currently French officials will again be permitted to intercept boats before they collect asylum-seeking passengers from the beaches of northern France, however it's not clear how the vessels will be stopped.
Powerful gusts are currently delaying the commencement of intervention operations and the human trafficking networks will be looking for ways to adapt to avoid detection, as they have done so often in the previous instances.
The Home Office and Downing Street have been contacted for response.
